Following the belief expressed in Olga Tokarczuk’s Flights that “what is in motion will always be better than what remains at rest”, the NFM Leopoldinum Orchestra sets out to the city with music. Marcin Masecki will also travel with the Wrocław ensemble and his wandering piano, accompanied by dancers, and they do not need to be convinced of the importance of movement. A detailed list of locations where you can meet these artists will be revealed soon.
The dance pieces, referring to various traditions, will create a spring riot of colours. They will reach back to the Baroque, to the work of one of the first violin virtuosos whose fame reached international circles – Arcangelo Corelli. His Sonata belongs to a collection of twelve works of this genre published in 1700 and is one of his most famous works. The Italian uses a theme rooted in the 16th century and develops it in the form of variations. When writing his Four Seasons of Buenos Aires, Astor Piazzolla referenced the legendary cycle of four violin concertos by another Italian baroque composer, whose fame is now equal to Corelli’s – Antonio Vivaldi. In 1965, the lively Summer in Buenos Aires aka Verano porteño was created first. The composition was originally written for the performance Melenita de oro. The entire series was presented only in 1970.
The other works featured in the programme will show the culture of Central Europe from different perspectives. You will listen to the classic waltz Wiener Blut by Johann Strauss II, created on the occasion of the wedding of the daughter of Emperor Franz Joseph – Archduchess Gisela of Austria. The musicians will also present a dance composition by Marcin Masecki. A decade ago, on the album Polonaises, Masecki reinterpreted the form of traditional court dance, searching for rhythms and sounds close to his own contemporary sensitivity and looking reserve at the immortals: Chopin, Ogiński and Kilar.
