The internationally acclaimed Venezuelan trumpeter Pacho Flores has set himself the goal of expanding the repertoire dedicated to his instrument. For this purpose, he has already commissioned new works from five composers, and two of them feature in this programme. Manuel Hernández-Silva, Artistic Director of the Orquesta Filarmónica de Málaga, will conduct.

The concert will open with Margariteña – Glosa Sinfónica, written by the Venezuelan artist Inocente Carreño in 1954. It is a colourful rhapsody based on four songs from his native island, Margariteña. The world premiere of the work conducted by the composer in Caracas brought the young Carreño great recognition from the audience and the musical community. Then we will listen to the trumpet concerto entitled Salseando, virtuosic and full of brilliance, with numerous references to the popular music by Roberto Sierra. The premiere took place in January 2020 in Liverpool, where the solo part was played by Pacho Flores.

The second part of the concert will begin with George Gershwin’s An American in Paris. The composer’s goal was to a young American impressions from a stroll through the streets of the French capital. He absorbs sounds and impressions, he misses home, which is reflected in a blues melody at some point, but eventually he lets himself be carried away by the mood of Paris. The lineup of this work includes saxophones, as well as ... taxi horns, which are one of the most recognizable elements of this work. Gershwin visited Paris twice – in 1926 and 1928. Although plans to study composition with Maurice Ravel and Nadia Boulanger fell through, considering how successful the piece written at that time was, Gershwin’s European stay was by no means unsuccessful. During his first visit, he gave his hosts Mabel and Robert Schirmer a manuscript of a melody entitled Very Parisienne. It then became the basis of An American in Paris. The evening will end with the trumpet concerto Historias de Flores y Tangos by Daniel Freiberg, an artist living in New York who weaves classical, jazz, rock and South American music into his compositions. Flores premiered this attractive work in October 2021 in Oviedo, Spain.
